Pacifist 1.6.3 ($20 Shareware) Charles Srstka. Like other modern operating systems, Mac OS X offers a standard method of installing software. These packages are created with Apple's PackageMaker. Pacifist is a powerful Mac OS X utility that gives you full access to package and installer files and their contents, without running the installer itself. While I love Pacifist, Suspicious Package (SP) has become my go-to and I set it as my default '.pkg' file opener. It would be awesome if SP could have a setting where you drag your favorite anti-virus software into an image well and it would then offer the ability to open whatever package you are analyzing into that AV software whenever you run SP. Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up.pkg installer packages,.dmg disk images,.zip,.tar. Tar.gz,.tar.bz2,.pax, and.xar archives and more, and lets you extract or install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package (for example, if you. If you wonder on how to reinstall a broken app in your Mac OS X, this video will give you three choices on how to fix this issue. Pacifist is a shareware application that opens Mac OS X.pkg package files.dmg disk images, and.zip.tar.tar.gz.tar.bz2, and.xar archives and allows you to extract individual files and folders out of them.

Pacifist has existed for years as the main utility on the Mac for exploring .pkg Installer Packages on Mac OS X and extracting files from them. You can also use it with .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar archives. This is particularly useful if an application installed by Mac OS X becomes corrupted or needs replacing for another reason. Rather than reinstalling the entire Mac OS X, you can just replace what you need to – and it’s easy with Pacifist. You can also use it to browse the kernel extensions installed in your system and it lets you see what installer installed them, and whether the installer was made by Apple or a third-party. It’s just $20 shareware and it’s available directly from the developer CharlesSoft.

Pacifist is one of those really useful apps you wish you had that you didn’t know existed. Pacifist is a shareware application that opens Mac OS X.pkg package files,.dmg disk images, and.tar,.tgz, and.tar.gz file archives and allows you to extract individual files and folders out of them.

The interface is easy to use, giving you the option of opening a package, URL, Apple installers or searching installer receipts. I decided to try out browsing the Mac OS X Mountain Lion Installer app which I keep on my boot drive and backup drives (to save myself having to re-download in the future or rely on the Recovery partition or Internet recovery).

Like other modern operating systems, Mac OS X offers a standard method of installing software. These packages are created with Apple's PackageMaker utility, which is included with the free XCode developer tools. If you've installed these tools, you can find PackageMaker in the Developer/Applications/Utilities folder. In many cases, the package does a fine job of installing the software that you want. However, there may be times when you'd like to peek into a package and see what makes it tick. If only there was a way to peek inside a package...

Pacifist offers several options after you launch it. One option which should interest just about any Gadget reader is 'Open Mac OS X Install Packages,' which of course requires that you have a Mac OS X install disc handy. Once Pacifist completes this operation (which can take some time) you'll be greeted with a view that shows the individual components that make up the Mac OS X installation package.

View the Contents of a Package

This is where the fun begins. In addition to being able to view every file that makes up a package (which can also be done by selecting 'View Package Contents' via a Finder Contextual Menu) you can also Extract the contents of a package, and even Install the application or components from a specific package. This can be especially useful if you've lost or damaged a part of Mac OS X, and would rather not perform an installation of the entire OS.

Pacifist also offers the option of opening a package other than the Mac OS X installer. You can also choose to Update Prebinding Information, which helps Mac OS X know about any package components that you've recently installed. So take the opportunity to make the most of your packages today, and be sure to give Pacifist a try.
